Former Homeland Security official: Tell public all you knowTriCities.comDuring crises, governments and businesses should remember a simple rule: tell the public all you know -- but don't be afraid to admit what you don't know, a King College...
Great words to remember when you have a facility or business that is in crisis. When people in any community are faced with a threat to their existence, the same principles apply
1. Always act with the understanding that people are better prepared to succeed when they make their own chocies. Too often in crisis, leaders remain in directive mode for too long. While some things may improve, dependency grows, leaders become overwhelemed again and the whole thing begins to fall.
2. Reality setting is important. Building trust for your leadership is critical. For a unit that is failing and facing a crisis it is important that you take every opportunity not only to inform but also educate. Education means providing "context."
3. Context is explaining "Why". Context helps people to process information, to understand the "Why" in addition to the what. The more you educate, the more you empower individuals to make choices. A business facing a performance crisis needs people to make chocies and to choose with the context of success in mind.
