Google updates its mobile homepage to improve navigation, discovery

Google updates its mobile homepage to improve navigation, discovery | There's Definitely an App for That. | Scoop.it

Google has rolled out a new homepage design for mobile devices. The fresh version of the search engine’s on-the-go layout includes a large menu of various Google services.

As the folks at The Android Soul noted, “[the t]op bar on Google’s mobile homepage is now pretty similar to desktop’s.” Indeed. What brought this harmonization isn’t too hard to guess: the old mobile Google was a touch hard to navigate with normal-sized fingers. In one move, Google has homogenized its user interfaces, and made its chief product easier to use in a mobile environment.

An App That Combines All Your Calendars Into One

An App That Combines All Your Calendars Into One | There's Definitely an App for That. | Scoop.it
"Keeping one’s digital calendars and address books up to date is no small feat, and, at least until you settle into a nice routine for saving events and filling out virtual contact cards, the process can often end up sapping more time than it saves."

For now, Cue grabs up all events from your different calendars and supplements them with relevant information related to the event or the person. In the future, though, the plan is for Cue to essentially read your mind (based upon your smartphone usage, of course) and create a genius calendar for you, acting like your very own personal assistant.

Introducing INBOX PAUSE.

Introducing INBOX PAUSE. | There's Definitely an App for That. | Scoop.it

"For when you temporarily want to “pause” incoming email in Gmail."

The team at Boomerang, a Gmail browser extension, has created a "pause" button for your Gmail inbox. If you use the extension, you will now see a blue Pause button next to your inbox that, when clicked, will prevent any emails from coming in.

All you have to do to start getting emails again is un-pause it.

I can relate to incoming emails being distracting when there are important tasks to be done, but I can't imagine un-pausing my inbox and the stress I would probably feel with the reopening of the email floodgates.

Rumor: Google negotiating $1 billion acquisition of WhatsApp | Digital Trends

Rumor: Google negotiating $1 billion acquisition of WhatsApp | Digital Trends | There's Definitely an App for That. | Scoop.it
Google is four or five weeks into negotiating a billion dollar acquisition of mobile messaging app, WhatsApp, says a Digital Trends source.
Ally Greer's insight:

Is 2013 the year of the messaging apps?

WhatsApp is arguably the largest and most successful messaging app out there, boasting a record of 18 million messages sent on last New Year's eve.

It's not surprising that Google would want to jump on something like this before someone else does.

ShadowMe App Lets You Pretend to Be Someone Else on Twitter

ShadowMe App Lets You Pretend to Be Someone Else on Twitter | There's Definitely an App for That. | Scoop.it

"ShadowMe" is a new app that allows you to "lurk" on Twitter as any user of your choice.

This doesn't mean that you can sign in as anyone and tweet for them, but it does allow you to see the tweets from their followers and what comes up in their timeline. Apparently, it works equally well for celebrities or accounts with 10 followers.

This could be interesting for marketers who want to find out what interests their customers by seeing their custom build Twitter stream, but I somehow feel like it would be used a little more casually than that and is probably just a little useless.
